Stay Healthy While Losing Weight

In 1999, more than 108 million US residents were overweight or obese. The number of overweight or obese Americans has continued to expand and the average American has grown heavier in the last decade. Already one of the biggest public health challenges facing the country, experts have predicted that obesity and related health problems will reach the level of an epidemic by 2020.

The best way we have to combat obesity is to make people aware of the damage which extra weight can do to their health.

These are just some of the diseases which you’re at a higher risk of if you’re overweight:

1. Heart disease 2. Stroke 3. Diabetes 4. Cancer 5. Arthritis 6. Hypertension

Losing extra weight and keeping it off prevents these diseases and can help treat them in people who have already developed them.

Many companies have taken advantage of the obesity epidemic by selling fad diet plans. These make plenty of money for their manufacturers, but do not provide a long term solution. Instead, they tend to rely on pills and supplements. Even when these diets do allow users to lose some weight, this type of rapid weight loss is not healthy; and gaining back the lost pounds in the dreaded yo-yo is even worse ” and that’s exactly what happens to most of the people who use these programs.

It is better to rely on a healthy weight loss option which will provide lifetime results. You have to set realistic goals and not expect to lose a lot of pounds in a short span of time. Here are some tips on how you can lose those unwanted pounds the healthy way:

1. Do not starve your self

The key to a healthier way of losing weight is: Do not diet.

You may seem happy and feel that you are losing those unwanted flabs on your belly and thighs by skipping meals. But remember that this would not last long. Your body cannot tolerate having insufficient food to fuel the energy that you use up everyday.

If you get used to skipping one or two meals a day, your stored calories will be used up instead of the energy that should have been provided by your meals. So if you just eat one huge sandwich in one day, it will end up straight to your problem area (i.e. thighs, buttocks, hips).

2. Start your day right.

You should listen to your mother. Eat a nutritious breakfast every day to get your metabolism going.

This will get your metabolism working faster and burning fat all day long.

3. Eat small, healthy meals frequently.

If you want to lose weight, then the way to go is to eat small healthy meals five or six times per day instead of three larger ones. You’ll boost your metabolism this way and this technique also reduces overeating.

4. Decide on how much weight you want to lose.

You need to set goals for yourself which you can reach. Don’t expect to lose all of the weight in a month. Get regular exercise and eat a healthy diet and you’ll take the weight off in a healthy way which lets you stay trim and healthy for a lifetime.

Once you have decided on a weight loss plan or program, stick to it and make sure that you follow your own set of dieting rules.

5. Drink lots of water

When you get enough water, you’ll burn fat more efficiently. You’ll also be adequately hydrated and your skin will look better! Drink six to eight glasses of water daily.

6. Go easy on the sugar

You should be eating a diet which is largely composed of fresh fruits and vegetables along with whole grains and lean protein. While its fine to treat yourself to the occasional pastry, it shouldn’t be a regular part of your diet.

7. Watch your fat intake.

It’s not eating fat which makes you overweight; in any case, you need to get some dietary fat to maintain good health.

However, these should be heart-healthy fats like peanut and olive oils. Fish oils are also healthy and contain healthy Omega-3 fatty acids.

8. Get exercise regularly

Leave your car if you are only going a few blocks from home, take the stairs instead of the elevator, jog, cycle or skate. Use these activities and other home chores if you are too lazy to go to the gym and take exercise classes. Make sure that you do this regularly and you will not even notice that you are already shedding pounds with these mundane activities.

Whatever your weight loss goal happens to be, the way to get there is to set realistic goals which you know you can reach. When you reach a goal, it gives you the motivation to keep going.

Remember not to push yourself too hard. Don’t be afraid to take it easy for a day and pat yourself on the back after you meet that first goal; you’ve earned it. Of course, don’t wait too long – you’ll want to get back in the saddle and on your way towards the next goal.

Eating a healthy and well balanced diet, getting ample regular exercise, making sure to get a good nights sleep every night and drinking enough water will help you to lose weight the healthy way. The rewards for your dedication will be more energy, a healthy glow and a slim, trim new you!
